Maria Shell draws her inspiration from the tradition and craftsmanship of American quilts. After many years of practice mastering cutting, piecing and quilting, this Alaskan-born artist, who has won several awards for her distinctive art, skilfully manipulates the classic elements of traditional quilts to create surprising compositions of pattern, repetition and color. From 2011 onwards, Maria focused on a specific motif, the grid, which she declined in all its forms. Playing with line, material and color, she creates dynamic compositions that are as captivating individually as when assembled together.
