Episode 11#GUESTTALENTS: RUBAN LINE by Estudio Persona

"Emiliana Gonzalez and Jessie Young embody a unique and ever evolving practice that is evident in their femenine lines and sculptural shapes."

Who are Estudio Persona? What did they design for Pierre Frey?

Created in 2015, Estudio Persona is the result of a collaborative work between Emiliana Gonzalez and Jessie Young. Their unconventional designs follow strong lines combined with a distinctly neutral and minimal approach. Fascinated by traditional craftsmanship, they work with natural materials and embody a unique and ever evolving practice that is evident in their feminine lines and sculptural shapes.
They designed the RUBAN line for Pierre Frey to pay homage to this narrow strip of fabric ornamentation. A single line, with a strong yet subtle presence, outlines the contours of the seats. Entirely upholstered, the pieces impose themselves by their very graphic aesthetic.

Designers words

How would you describe your line?
Ruban is a family of upholstered seating, composed of three elements: a chair, a bench and an armchair. Using the ribbon as the main element of this collection, transforming in each piece to create a distinctive functional element.

How would you summarize this furniture line in 3 words?
Straight forward, strong, atemporal.

How did you find your inspiration and why did you choose to call the line RUBAN?
The inspiration behind Ruban, as the word suggests came from the multifaceted qualities a ribbon carries. From useful to ornamental and symbolic. The flat strip of fabric that binds together physical and emotional subjects.

What is the characteristic detail of the line?
Modern and classic at the same time, this line showcases the craftsmanship behind the construction and focuses on simple details.
The main piece bends and flows, making the fabric appear to have its own strength.

What is the richness of these pieces?
Creating a continuous dialogue of endless lines, the movement that the folding of the ribbon has, plays with the intricate softness that defines them.

An anecdote about the manufacturing or creative process?
Recreating the fluent movement of a ribbon when it folds, while at the same time giving support and structure was a big challenge. Working closely with expert artisans we developed a way to make the inner wooden structure to appear to fold, while the fabric accompased that movement.
