Designed in 1807 by Pierre-Antoine Mongin, this panoramic wallpaper offers an idealised view of India in the early 19th century. Produced using the traditional ‘woodblock’ technique, it is printed manually from 1,265 wood-engraved blocks, now classified as Historic Monuments.
The composition unfolds a continuous landscape of Indo-Islamic architecture, palaces, fortresses and river scenes animated by groups of figures in traditional costumes. The palette, dominated by blues, ochres and deep greens with touches of orange, creates an evanescent and idyllic atmosphere, enhanced by an iridescent sky, a speciality of the Manufacture.
