Meeting with an artist !
The collaboration between fabric editor Pierre Frey and painter, poster artist and decorator Jean-Denis Malclès began in 1941, when the two aesthetes met in the “Salon des artistes décorateurs” Pierre Frey, a pioneer in the publishing of highly colored printed fabrics with surrealist themes, totally adheres to the artist's inimitable style, from whom he purchased some twenty drawings between 1941 and 1954. From their mutual understanding, beautiful fabrics will emerge, including one of the best-sellers of the house, which has been in the collection for nearly 60 years.
The drawing "Le Jardin de Monsieur Malclès", never published, had remained in draft form and preserved in the archives of the Maison Pierre Frey. To reproduce it in the Les Dessins 4 wallpaper collection, the design studio chose a printing technique that resembles the appearance of an actual painting on which one can sense the relief of the different layers of colours. The brightly coloured wallpaper on a black background, which is particularly contemporary, is the identical representation of the archive document. To complete the range, three other colours have been created.
The collection of more than 25,000 documents remains an endless source of inspiration for the creation of the Maison Pierre Frey collections. Eighty years after its conception, the work "Le Jardin de Monsieur Malclès" remains very modern. A pioneer in his unique approach to decoration and his work with artists, Pierre Frey was right !
