Episode 7 #GuestTalents: MAJORDOME LINE by Sam Baron

"I like to question the relationship between the past and the present."

Who is Sam Baron? What did he design for Pierre Frey?

Designer and artistic director of the furniture department at Pierre Frey since 2020, Sam Baron is very attached to the heritage of the Decorative Arts. He positions his vision in our daily life and its contemporaneity through the re-reading and reinterpretation of artisanal or industrial know-how.
He has developed the Majordome line for Pierre Frey, inspired by the 1930s and the French decorative spirit, in a modern reinterpretation of the boudoir salon in homage to Madeleine Castaing, an antiquarian and decorator of the 20th century.

Designer's words

The Majordome line is part of the Heritage Collection. What does this collection mean to you?

The Heritage collection offers pieces that refer to French heritage and its "style lines". This exercise of harmonising tradition and modernity, echoes my work, in which I have developed a certain sense of culture and decorative arts, with frequent references. I like to question the relationship between the past and the contemporary, so it was only naturel that I chose to design a line for the Heritege collection. For this line I was inspired by the 1930s/40s and the generous universe or Madeleine Castaing, whom I have alweys admired.

What was your main source of inspiration?

I recently read a beautiful and inspiring book about Madeleine Castaing which talked about her lifestyle, her way of designing, her way of creating ensembles. She hosted many shows end loved to entertain. This made me want to create a line based on sharing and allowing people to get together. This 4-piece set is called Majordome in reference to this book. The word "butler" was one of the most present words in the book, because Madeleine Castaing was always surrounded by these people, who were faithful to her. The spirit of this book also accompanied me in the choice of fa bries and finishes for the first design of this line. Chic, dark green, shiny velvet, fabrics with animal skin patterns and gold were very fashionable in the 1930s and 1940s. Like Madeleine Castaing who surprised with her associations of shapes, materials end colours, this unexpected mix of textures, colours and patterns modifies the classic aesthetic and brings a certain freshness.

What atmosphere did you want to convey in this 4-piece set?

With this line, use was at the heart of the creative process. I wanted to recreate the atmosphere of a boudoir and compose a convivial set that invites gatherings and conversations. I favoured small pieces, rather than imposing ceremonial ones, to allow for relaxed sharing. The large footstool can be used as a coffee table, but it can also be used to sit alone or with others. The armchair brings people together end creates a bond through its angled shape. And the meridian invites us to a lenguid attitude that is conducive to confidences, but can also be used to seat two people or to work in.

What is the most striking detail of this line?

The cornice design marks the Majordome line like a signature. lt is a clean aesthetic element that I use regularly in my work. I find this detail very interesting because it is very structuring. lts belonging to the field of architecture gives it, in a way, a collective memory, and it can be used in different ways. Here, the eut-out, like a comice, adds character and presence to the Majordome line. This architectural shape refers to a very French and Parisien style and acts as a link between the different rooms.
